About Liposuction

Liposuction is a surgical procedure designed to minimize stubborn areas of fat and contour the results to look natural, however, it is not a weight loss procedure. These stubborn areas of fat can develop for various reasons, from changes in body chemistry to simple genetics. For patients, it can feel exceptionally frustrating when diet and exercise seem not to affect these areas of unwanted fat.

Liposuction procedures are performed on an outpatient basis, so patients can return home once the immediate effects of the anesthesia wear off. Generally speaking, liposuction usually follows these steps.

  • Anesthesia — In most cases, patients undergo general anesthesia for major liposuction procedures. However, for some patients, local anesthesia is the preferred option.
  • Incision — Dr. Ogilvie will make small incisions in the desired area. These incisions will usually be only two or three centimeters in length. Then, a small tube called a cannula is inserted and used to suction out the unwanted fat. Other devices or techniques may help break up and contour the fat in the desired fashion.
  • Suction — Once the incisions are made, a small tube called a cannula is inserted. This cannula is then moved back and forth to suction out unwanted areas of fat. Modern liposuction techniques give Dr. Ogilvie a significant amount of control and finesse, meaning results are often quite natural.

Introduction to Liposuction

As performed by Dr. Ogilvie in Chicago, liposuction requires only very small incisions, so it’s usually referred to as a minimally invasive procedure. Modern liposuction techniques allow Dr. Ogilvie to express significant control and finesse, meaning your results will blend in with your body's natural curves and forms.

This means that it won’t be obvious you’ve undergone a liposuction procedure–the only thing that will be obvious is how good you look.

Typical Treatment Areas:

  • Neck and Chin
  • Arms
  • Abdomen, Flanks, and Back
  • Thighs
  • Calf and Ankle

How Do I Start the Liposuction Process?

The first step in the liposuction process is a consultation with Dr. Ogilvie. During this consultation, you’ll be able to discuss your desired final look with Dr. Ogilvie and plan a pathway forward. Dr. Ogilvie believes strongly in a transparent and educational experience for patients, so he may also discuss other aspects of the liposuction procedure.

Many patients who undergo liposuction around the abdomen may also require a tummy tuck. Dr. Ogilvie will discuss that possibility with you during your consultation. To set up that consultation, call our Chicago area office to make an appointment!

Who is a Good Candidate For Liposuction?

Liposuction is generally used as a body contouring solution, not as a massive weight loss method (bariatric surgery, for example, would be a better option for weight loss purposes). However, liposuction can be used to eliminate unwanted areas of fat across broad and specific parts of the body.

The targets for liposuction vary considerably. There are, in fact, few areas of the body that are not good targets for a liposuction procedure. However, the most popular liposuction targets are usually the abdomen, torso, and legs (although the neck and chin areas are also common).

In some cases, liposuction of the abdomen will create a small amount of excess skin (if sufficient fat is removed). As a result, many patients will also opt for a tummy tuck to be performed concurrently or subsequently with their liposuction procedure.

Is Liposuction Right For Me?

In general, a good candidate for liposuction will:

  • Want to eliminate fat from a specific area of the body
  • Wish to achieve a more slender-looking silhouette
  • Desire results that look natural and contour to the rest of the body
  • Be able to maintain a relatively stable weight
  • Be generally healthy enough for surgery
  • Have realistic expectations about what liposuction can achieve

If you think you’re a good candidate for liposuction, contact Dr. Ogilvie to schedule a consultation today.

Recovery And Results

Patients may experience swelling and bruising for two to three weeks after their liposuction procedure (depending on the extent and nature of the liposuction). Dr. Ogilvie will give patients detailed and personalized instructions on how to keep swelling under control after the procedure. Once the swelling subsides, you will notice that the treated area looks significantly more slender and fit, contoured to the natural curves and corners of your body.

About Us
How much does liposuction cost?

The liposuction varies depending on the technique selected and the amount of areas being addressed. During your consultation, Dr. Ogilvie will create your personal liposuction surgical plan based on your needs and goals. He will also consider your budget. When your plan is ready, estimated costs will be discussed. To help make your surgery easy to afford, Ogilvie Plastic Surgery takes many payment options and we can help you find low-interest financing.

What about nonsurgical liposuction?

Thanks to modern advancements, there are many nonsurgical options to reduce fat. Some popular methods are CoolSculpting, UltraShape, Vanquish, KYBELLA, and Liposonix. Although these nonsurgical procedures may help reduce mild to moderate fat pockets, surgical liposuction is still best for most people. Liposuction surgery produces more consistent and dramatic results. Talk to Dr. Ogilvie about nonsurgical liposuction during your consultation. He can explain the benefits and drawbacks of all your options and help you choose which is best for your needs and goals.

What about cellulite and loose skin?

Surgical liposuction only addresses excess fat. If you have loose skin, Dr. Ogilvie may suggest combining liposuction with a lift surgery. Lipo is often performed along with skin tightening surgery, such as a tummy tuck, arm lift, or thighplasty, to produce the best results. For cellulite, there are many nonsurgical and minimally invasive treatments, including Cellulaze, VelaShape, VASER Shape, and Venus Freeze. During your consultation, talk to Dr. Ogilvie about all your concerns like loose skin and cellulite so a comprehensive treatment plan can be developed.

Can liposuction be combined with other procedures?

Yes, it's common for patients to combine liposuction with other procedures for more comprehensive results. For instance, liposuction is frequently paired with tummy tucks, breast lifts, or even facial surgeries. Combining procedures can sometimes be more cost-efficient and can minimize the overall recovery time. Speak with Dr. Ogilvie during your consultation to discuss your specific needs and goals.

What are the long-term maintenance requirements after liposuction?

Once the fat cells are removed via liposuction, they don't grow back. However, remaining fat cells can expand with weight gain. Long-term maintenance generally involves a stable diet and regular exercise to keep your newly contoured shape. Dr. Ogilvie can offer more personalized guidelines based on your individual circumstances.

How do I choose between surgical and nonsurgical fat removal?

The choice between surgical and nonsurgical methods often depends on how much fat you want to remove and your desired results. Surgical liposuction provides more dramatic and consistent outcomes, while nonsurgical options like CoolSculpting may be suitable for smaller fat pockets. During your consultation, we will assess your condition and recommend the most appropriate treatment option for you.
