Get Started!

What’s the First Step?

If you are seriously considering Ear Surgery in Chicago, the first step is to book a consultation with Dr. Ogilvie. During this appointment, you will meet with Dr. Ogilvie, learn more about what ear surgery involves, and decide whether this procedure is right for you.

During the consultation, Dr. Ogilvie will evaluate the ear’s condition and recommend the most effective technique if you wish to move forward with the surgery. In that case, Dr. Ogilvie will create your procedure plan, and our patient coordinator will schedule your surgical date and provide you with instructions on how to prepare for the procedure. This will include specific guidelines on drinking, eating, smoking, and avoiding certain medications and vitamins.

What to Expect on the Day of Ear Surgery Surgery

On the day of your Ear Surgery, our friendly, inviting staff will prep you for the procedure and get you comfortable. Dr. Ogilvie will then walk you through his surgical process and the techniques he will use to address your particular concerns.

Once you are ready, the first step will be administering anesthesia to make you comfortable and minimize any pain.

Once the sedation takes effect, Dr. Ogilvie will begin making the incisions. Based on the type of correction you are looking for, the incision can be made on the back of your ear, or for protruding ears, he will use surgical techniques to create or increase the fold just inside the rim of the ear. This particular technique allows Dr. Ogilvie to reduce the size of your ear and hide the scarring in the natural fold.

Incisions may also be made on the front of the ear when deemed necessary to address your problems. Internal, non-removable sutures are used to create and secure the newly shaped cartilage in place.

The final step is to close the inc, which is done by external stitches. Dr. Ogilvie will not distort other structures and avoid an unnatural “pinned back” look. Bandages and gauze will be applied around your face to keep the sutures in place and prevent impact on the wound site.

Ear Surgery Recovery

After your ear surgery, our post-op team will equip you with a comprehensive list of do’s and don’ts that you will take home with you. This list will help guide you through the recovery period, which will include keeping the bandages in place until Dr. Ogilvie says it is safe to remove them. Once he removes your bandages, your ears will likely be swollen and red, and you may be required to utilize a headband that will keep your ears in place and prevent any damage from rolling over in bed accidentally.

Although it will be tempting to do so, you must avoid itching under the bandage. This will help prevent any reopening of your incisions, as additional corrective surgery is required.

It is typical to experience mild pain, swelling, sor, eness or headaches after ear surgery. Dr. Ogilvie will give you advice on pain medication and other methods or remedies that can help alleviate discomfort during recovery.

Sleeping can be a concern for ear surgery patients, so we advise sleeping on your back to prevent rolling onto your ears, which will be extremely painful after surgery. Choose clothing that is loose-fitting around the neck or button-down shirts wherever possible so that you don’t bump the ears or wound in any way.
