Introduction to Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)

Excess skin accumulating around the eyes can interfere with a patient’s ability to emote properly. Although one may feel energized and happy, the sagging skin can make them look tired, depressed, or angry. This can profoundly change the way that others interact with you. Dr. Ogilvie’s blepharoplasty approach emphasizes natural-looking transformations, so your eyes—not the plastic surgery procedure—are the center of attention.

What is Eyelid Surgery?

Blepharoplasty, also known as an eyelid lift, is a surgical procedure that diminishes and mitigates lines, wrinkles, and excess skin around the eyes and eyelids. Eyelid surgery can be performed on the upper eyelid, the lower eyelid, or both, depending on the issues you want to address. Blepharoplasty is usually done in an outpatient setting, followed by a series of appointments to track healing and progress. Results from eyelid surgery vary from patient to patient but can most commonly be noticeable after a few weeks when incisions are healed.

 Upper Eyelid Surgery

As one of the most common Blepharoplasty approaches, upper eyelid surgery removes excess skin that occurs over time due to age or genetics.  Our Chicago patients have enjoyed the benefits of this technique as their eyes look bigger, brighter, and more alert. Upper eyelid surgery can also help improve your field of vision and make the eyelid feel less heavy.

 Lower Eyelid Surgery

In this procedure, patients focus on the adjustment of excess skin in and around the lower eyelid, such as undereye bags. By eliminating the look of bags under the eyes, it helps address the “hollow” look that is common during aging. Whether it is due to genetics, lifestyle, or simply aging, our surgery can remove excess fatty tissue, drastically improving and smoothing the skin around the area. This will enable a more refreshed-looking appearance to your eyes and surrounding skin.

What Are the Benefits of Eyelid Surgery?

Our patients who have received Eyelid Surgery in Chicago have discussed a range of benefits, some of which are included below:

  • Better vision
  • Boost in self-confidence
  • Enhanced eyelid contour
  • Improved dark circles
  • Improved eye contact
  • No more puffy under eyes
  • Reduced wrinkles
  • Rejuvenated appearance

Who Are the Best Candidates For Eyelid Surgery?

Blepharoplasty is most used to address several specific issues around the eyes. An eyelid lift can be performed independently or in conjunction with other facial rejuvenation procedures. Good candidates for blepharoplasty will typically:

  • Be generally healthy enough for surgery.
  • Have a significant amount of excess skin around the eyes or eyelids
  • Have been told that they look “tired” or “sad” even when they are not
  • Have difficulty seeing because of excess tissue around the eyes
  • Have realistic expectations about what an eyelid lift procedure can accomplish
  • Notice bulges of tissue above and below the eyes

Let’s Get Started

What’s the first step?

The first step in the blepharoplasty process is to schedule a consultation with Dr. Ogilvie at his Chicago office. Your consultation is important because you’ll be able to ask any questions you might have regarding the procedure. At the same time, Dr. Ogilvie will be able to evaluate your needs, desires, and physiology to ensure an eyelid lift is the right choice to achieve your transformation.

During your consultation, Dr. Ogilvie will discuss your health history and what you want to accomplish with your eyelid lift procedure. You may also discuss whether you’re a good fit for other facial rejuvenation procedures, such as brow lifts or facelifts.

To schedule your consultation, contact our offices directly to speak with a customer service representative about making an appointment.

What to Expect on the Day of Eyelid Surgery

Blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) is usually performed as an outpatient procedure. Patients can return home on the same day as their procedure, though they will require transportation to and from the clinic.

  1. Anesthesia – Blepharoplasty procedures can be performed with either general or local anesthesia. You may also be given a sedative if you opt for local anesthesia.
  2. Incision –Patients may undergo an upper or lower blepharoplasty, depending on where the excess skin and tissue are located.
  3. Closure – Incisions are typically closed using sutures removed one week after surgery.

Eyelid Surgery Recovery

After the surgery, you will be monitored in the recovery room until sedation wears off. We encourage patients to have a family member or a friend drive them home.

Immediately after the surgery, your eyes may be covered with bandages to protect the incisions and promote healing. Minor swelling, bruising, and discomfort are common, but Dr. Ogilvie can prescribe pain medication, eye drops, and/or ointments to help recover and prevent infection.

During the initial days of recovery, keeping your head elevated and applying cold compresses to reduce swelling is essential.

Eyelid Surgery Cost

How Much Does Eyelid Surgery Cost in Chicago, IL?
