Hairline Lowering

Introduction to Hairline Lowering

Our hair can be a crowning feature, or it can be the cause of insecurities when it doesn’t frame the face the way we envision. Things such as genetics, hair loss, or even prior surgery can all be possible causes for a high hairline, and most people are unaware that there is a specialized surgical procedure for both men and women that effectively reduces the appearance of a large forehead. Dr. Michael Ogilvie in Chicago, IL, employs precision and artistry when performing hairline lowering surgery, resulting in a transformative process that sculpts a natural-looking hairline that enhances your overall facial proportions.

What is Hairline Lowering?

Hairline Lowering, sometimes referred to as forehead reduction or scalp advancement, is a unique surgical procedure designed to lower the position of the hairline. The goal of the procedure is to create a more balanced and harmonious facial appearance by reducing the forehead’s vertical height. With his meticulous planning and advanced techniques, Dr. Ogilvie ensures that the results will meet and exceed your expectations, providing a newfound spirit and aesthetic harmony with yourself and your hairline.

What Are the Benefits of Hairline Lowering?

Many of our hairline lowering patients in Chicago have cited the following benefits from their surgery:

  • Reduction in forehead surface area
  • Lower hairline
  • More dense hairline to frame the face
  • Adjustment to facial symmetry
  • Restoring self-confidence in your appearance
  • The ability to wear hair pulled back without feeling self-conscious
  • The appearance of a fuller head of hair starting at the hairline and forehead

Who Are the Best Candidates For Hairline Lowering?

If you are considering a Chicago hairline lowering surgery, these are some of the attributes that can make you an ideal candidate:

  • Women with a naturally high hairline or large forehead who otherwise have thick hair and no personal or familial history of hair loss.
  • Men with a high hairline or large forehead can also be good candidates for hairline-lowering surgery if they have a thick hairline and no personal or family history of hair loss.
  • Good scalp laxity is important.

When you book a consultation with Dr. Ogilvie, he will assess your individual case to determine if you are the right candidate for this type of surgery. He will never recommend a procedure that is not right or that you will not benefit from.

Hairline Lowering First Step

What’s the First Step?

The first step on your road to a lower hairline that compliments your overall facial symmetry is to call Ogilvie Plastic Surgery for a consultation. During the consultation session, Dr. Michael Ogilvie will assess your hairline and scalp laxity and assess how hairline lowering will benefit you. He may ask you for a background medical history, as underlying health issues can impact your ability to get this procedure. Dr. Ogilvie will also be able to give you a visual idea of what a hairline lowering surgery will look like on your scalp.

Before you arrive at our practice, our patient coordinator will give you a set of pre-operative instructions to follow to prepare for surgery. This can include fasting for a certain period of time or avoiding certain medications such as blood thinners.

What to Expect on the Day of Hairline Lowering Surgery

On the day of your procedure, you will meet with Dr. Ogilvie, who will walk you through the techniques he will be using, as discussed in your consultation. The first step will be to administer a type of anesthesia to numb the area. Depending on what is discussed during your consultation, this could be either local or general anesthesia, IV Sedation, or a combination.

Next, based on your approval, Dr. Ogilvie will mark the hairline where the incision will be made, as designed in the consultation. You will then be brought into the operating suite, where you will be placed in a supine position with your head slightly elevated. Once the scalp is well anesthetized, the incision is made at the hairline. Individual hair grafts are taken from the back of the scalp and implanted to create a newly shaped and lower hairline. Finally, Dr. Ogilvie will suture the skin together to reduce the size of your forehead.

Once the surgery is complete, you will be given time to recover from the anesthesia in our waiting room, where our medical team will give you instructions on post-operative care and recovery.

The surgery can take up to two hours to complete.

Hairline Lowering Recovery

Before you leave, Dr. Ogilvie may apply more anesthesia to keep you comfortable when you return home. It is recommended that you arrange transportation to and from your surgery so you can relax after the surgery. A dressing or bandage will be placed on the surgical site to keep the sutures in place. You will need to avoid wearing restrictive head coverings and hats for up to a week following surgery so as not to disrupt the sutures as they begin to heal.

Due to the initial incision, the scalp will be quite sensitive for six to nine months following surgery, and Dr. Ogilvie will continue to monitor your progress and healing along the way.

Most patients can resume non-strenuous activities in the days following surgery. If they experience additional pain throughout the recovery period, Dr. Ogilvie can advise on pain management and prescribe pain medication.
