Rhinoplasty

Introduction to Rhinoplasty

At our practice in Chicago, rhinoplasty is the most popular procedure we perform. Even small changes to the nose can make a big impression. That’s because the nose acts as an anchor and centerpiece for the aesthetic features of the face. When the nose is too big or too small, it tends to stand out and affect facial harmony; however, when the nose is aesthetically balanced with the other elements of the face, everything works together.

If you want rhinoplasty in Chicago, Dr. Michael Ogilvie is here to help you achieve the facial transformation you’ve always wanted. Commonly referred to as a “nose job,” rhinoplasty can add or remove volume from your nose and change its overall shape and appearance.

What is a Rhinoplasty?

Commonly referred to as a “nose job,” cosmetic nose surgery can include a variety of aesthetic and reconstructive techniques to improve breathing and the appearance of the nose, leading to a refreshed facial first impression. The procedure can be performed as a closed rhinoplasty or an open rhinoplasty. Rhinoplasty is one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures available today.

Functional Rhinoplasty

Functional Rhinoplasty is a reconstructive surgery that corrects either a deviated septum or an obstructed pathway that causes breathing challenges and turbulent airflow.

For more information on functional rhinoplasty, please refer to its dedicated page on functional rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty Revision

Rhinoplasty revision is precisely what it sounds like. It is a revision of a previously occurring rhinoplasty that did not achieve its cosmetic or functional goals.

For more information on rhinoplasty revision, please refer to its dedicated page on revision rhinoplasty.

Septoplasty

Septoplasty is a surgical procedure that straightens a deviated nasal septum, the partition that separates the two nasal cavities. When patients have limited ability to breathe through their nose or are unable to breathe through their deviated septum, often a septoplasty is required to improve their breathing functionally. Dr. Ogilvie has performed many septoplasty procedures, often along with a rhinoplasty, for patients unable to breathe fully.

Non-Surgical Rhinoplasty

A non-surgical rhinoplasty uses dermal filler injections to transform the overall shape of the nose. The results from these filler injections will typically wane in 18-24 months, but there is virtually no recovery time for patients. You will also be able to see your results from these injections immediately. This is a popular choice owing to its low recovery downtime and non-invasive nature.

Open Vs. Closed Rhinoplasty

The complexity of the changes required determines the choice between an open and closed rhinoplasty.

Closed Rhinoplasty: In this approach, all incisions are made inside the nose, meaning there are no visible external scars. This method is generally preferred for less extensive reshaping of the nose, such as reducing a bump on the bridge or refining the tip. Because of the limited access, closed rhinoplasty typically results in a faster recovery time.

Open Rhinoplasty: This technique involves making a small incision across the columella (the tissue between the nostrils), allowing for greater visibility and access to the nasal structures. Open rhinoplasty is often used for more complicated cases or when significant structural changes are required, such as straightening a crooked nose or rebuilding the nasal tip. This method may result in slightly longer recovery times, but it allows Dr. Ogilvie to perform intricate reshaping for a more refined result.

What is a Rhinoplasty?

The nose is a complex structure composed of bones, cartilage, skin, and mucous membranes. Understanding the anatomy is essential for a successful rhinoplasty procedure. The key components include:

  • Nasal Bridge: The upper portion of the nose, composed of the nasal bones, significantly influences its overall appearance. The shape and width of the nasal bridge are key factors in determining facial harmony and balance.
  • Nasal Tip: The tip of the nose is primarily composed of cartilage, which can be carefully sculpted to enhance its projection or shape, contributing to a more refined and balanced appearance.
  • Nostrils: The nostrils, a key nasal anatomy feature, can be reshaped and refined to improve their symmetry and size, creating a more balanced and harmonious appearance.
  • Septum: The septum, the partition dividing the two nasal cavities, can be corrected during surgery to enhance the nose’s aesthetic form and functional airflow.

He will then make your procedure plan, and our patient coordinator will help you schedule your surgical date and provide you with pre-op instructions.

Pre-operative preparation: Prior to your surgery, you will be asked to fast for at least eight hours, come in showered and clean, avoid moisturizers, makeup, and perfume, and turn in a blood test, among other instructions. We will provide you with a detailed list as mentioned above.

Surgery: When you come into our surgical center, Dr. Ogilvie will review your surgery before you are administered anesthesia. He will perform the steps as discussed during your consultation and close any incisions. You will be able to return home on the same day as your procedure.

Recovery: After surgery, you can expect some initial bruising and swelling and feel congested in your nose, which will subside over the next week or two. You will need to sleep with your head elevated and avoid strenuous activity for a few weeks, although you will be encouraged to go on light walks to prevent blood clotting.

Rhinoplasty First Step

What’s the First Step?

Any rhinoplasty process with Dr. Ogilvie will start with a consultation. During your consultation, Dr. Ogilvie will discuss your desired results with you. Your physiology will be a significant factor when determining precisely what can be accomplished and what changes can be made to your nose. Dr. Ogilvie will guide you through the consultation process so you are fully aware of your options. Depending on your medical history, aesthetic and functional goals, and expectations, he will help you select the proper technique for you.

Once Dr. Ogilvie deems you an ideal candidate, he will draft a treatment plan, which you can then take to our patient coordinator to schedule the procedure and discuss other matters, such as billing and operative instructions.

What to Expect on the Day of a Rhinoplasty Procedure

The rhinoplasty procedure in Chicago is nearly always performed on an outpatient basis. Once you have recovered from the primary effects of the anesthesia, you will be allowed to return home for the duration of your recovery.

Anesthesia — Rhinoplasty is performed with general anesthesia.

Incision — A rhinoplasty can be performed in an “open” or “closed” fashion. During a closed rhinoplasty, an incision is made inside the nose (just inside the piece of tissue between the two nostrils). Work is then performed through this small incision. During an open rhinoplasty, an incision is made between the nostrils. The tissue is then pulled up and over the nose, providing necessary access to the nose to make significant changes. The incision used typically depends upon how extensive the procedure will be.

What to Expect on the Day of a Septoplasty

Septoplasty alone or as part of a larger rhinoplasty is nearly always performed on an outpatient basis. Once you have recovered from the primary effects of the anesthesia, you will be allowed to return home for the duration of your recovery.

Anesthesia – Septoplasty is performed with general anesthesia.

The incision used typically depends upon how extensive the procedure will be.

Results – The ultimate goal is improved breathing, which can be achieved via an open or closed approach.

Rhinoplasty Recovery

As an outpatient procedure, you can return home the same day after you have been released from our care. However, you will need a family member or friend available to provide you with a ride, as you will still be groggy from the effects of sedation. Please take the next few days to rest and relax as you recover, as this will help prevent any unnecessary incidents or complications.

You will need to sleep with your head elevated and avoid accidental trauma to your nose as it heals. You may require a nose splint to provide additional protection and support for the initial stages of your recovery, but when you come in for your check-up appointments, Dr. Oglivie or one of our providers will let you know how much longer you will be required to wear it.

Patients can expect more significant transformations when undergoing an open rhinoplasty. However, a closed rhinoplasty typically heals more quickly and allows patients to return to work more rapidly.

If you want to know more about how rhinoplasty might improve the aesthetics and proportions of your nose and face, contact our office to schedule a consultation with Dr. Ogilvie and begin your transformation process.
