About Breast Fat Transfer

A breast fat transfer is a very specific technique for achieving breast augmentation. Most people are familiar with breast augmentation procedures that require a saline or silicone implant. Breast fat transfer procedures can achieve similar results but instead use donor fat from elsewhere on the body.

Introduction to Breast Fat Transfer

Sometimes referred to as a “fat graft breast augmentation,” these procedures usually remove unwanted fat from the abdomen and then, after a purification process, inject that fat into the breast tissues, increasing the size and volume of the breast, depending on how much native fat is available. The results tend to look and feel exceptionally natural.

The first step in any breast enhancement procedure, including breast fat transfer procedures, is to schedule a consultation with Dr. Ogilvie.

Getting Started on Your Breast Fat Transfer

During your consultation, Dr. Ogilvie will be able to assess your goals and your physiology to ensure that a breast fat transfer is the right choice for you.

You will also be able to ask and have addressed as many questions as you might have about your fat graft breast augmentation procedure. To schedule a consultation, contact our Chicago area office to speak with a customer service representative.

Who is a Good Candidate For Breast Fat Transfer?

Good candidates for fat graft breast augmentation procedures usually have two complementary desires: they wish to eliminate fat from one area and increase the volume of another. Generally speaking, a breast fat transfer procedure might be a good option for you if:

  • You want to increase the size and volume of your breasts.
  • You want to eliminate unwanted fat from your body (the most popular liposuction target is the abdomen, but it’s not the only option).
  • You have realistic expectations about what fat graft procedures can accomplish.
  • You want your results to look as natural as possible.
  • You do not want implants composed of silicone or saline and do not require a breast lift.
  • You are generally healthy enough for surgery.

A breast fat transfer procedure might not be a good fit for you if you have a low amount of body fat located elsewhere in your body. Most patients, however, can find the necessary fat deposits to accomplish the procedure.

What Are The Advantages Of The Breast Fat Transfer Procedure?

There are several reasons why patients might prefer to choose a breast fat transfer technique over a more traditional breast augmentation technique. Generally speaking, a fat transfer will offer the following advantages:

  • There will be no scarring risk on the breasts because there are virtually no incisions.
  • The overall look and feel of the breasts are entirely natural.
  • The incision for the liposuction procedure is quite small.
  • Patients get a sense of “two for the price of one,” as the procedure addresses two areas of discomfort.

Despite all of the benefits, some cases in which silicone or saline implants will still be a better choice for patients.

There are some drawbacks to the fat graft approach: the results are effectively permanent (a silicone or saline implant could be removed one day, but that’s not the case for grafted fat). Additionally, a small percentage of the fat grafted may not “take” to its new location–and the precise amount of fat involved can be difficult to predict accurately.

The Breast Fat Transfer Procedure

A breast fat transfer procedure will generally follow these steps:

Anesthesia — A breast fat transfer is usually performed under general anesthesia.

Incisions — The only incisions required for this procedure are liposuction and transfer. In most cases, a liposuction incision will be only 2-4 cm in length.

Injections — Once the fat is removed from the body, it will be injected into the breast tissue. It may take several dozen injections to ensure the fat is evenly and properly distributed.

Recovery And Results

Once the procedure is complete, patients will be able to return home for their recovery. Swelling and bruising may persist for several weeks, especially around the liposuction site. After swelling and bruising subside, you should be able to fully take in your results. For most patients, that means larger, more voluminous breasts that look incredibly natural.

About Us
How much does a fat transfer cost?

Fat transfer prices will vary depending on several factors. In transfers to the breasts or buttocks, a larger amount of fat is required, thus liposuction is used, which means a lengthier process is employed for fat purification and then graft it where needed. Smaller fat transfers, like adding facial volume, take less time and fat. The volume amount needed to achieve your needs and goals will be reviewed during your initial consultation with Dr. Ogilvie, along with estimates of cost and payment methods we accept.

How long will the results of a fat transfer to the breast last?

The results of a fat transfer to the breast look natural and can last for a long time with proper care. Dr. Ogilvie uses advanced techniques to purify and graft fat, which minimize reabsorption. However, there is usually still a small amount of fat that does not attach to the new area, so Dr. Ogilvie often adds slightly more fat than is needed. If you want to enhance or touch-up your results after a few years, another fat transfer can be performed.

Are there any alternative treatments to a fat transfer?

In your breasts, implants may be surgically placed instead of a fat transfer. You may also consider a breast lift to retain the current volume but raise the breasts. Dr. Ogilvie will explain all of the various options during your first appointment so that you can see the results that will match your needs and goals.

Is it possible to reverse a breast fat transfer?

Reversing a breast fat transfer is generally not a straightforward process because the transferred fat integrates with the existing breast tissue over time. However, liposuction can potentially remove some of the transferred fat if you're unsatisfied with the results. Discuss your concerns and options with Dr. Ogilvie during your consultation to determine the best course of action.

Will weight fluctuations affect the results of my breast fat transfer?

Yes, significant weight changes can affect the size and shape of your breasts after a fat transfer. Gaining weight may increase in breast size, while losing weight could lead to a decrease. Dr. Ogilvie recommends maintaining a stable weight for optimal results and may offer guidance on how to best achieve this during your consultation.

Can I exercise after a breast fat transfer?

It's important to avoid strenuous physical activity, including exercise, for a specific period after your breast fat transfer. Dr. Ogilvie will provide you with personalized guidelines based on your own recovery progress. Typically, light walking is encouraged shortly after surgery to promote good circulation, but more intense workouts will need to be postponed until you are fully healed and cleared by Dr. Ogilvie.
