Is a Breast Lift Right For Me?
Generally speaking, the best candidates for breast lift will:
- Want to address the significant sagging of the breasts.
- Want to address significant changes in the orientation of the breasts.
- May want to address changes in symmetry due to excess tissue around the breasts or changes in orientation.
- Notice a significant amount of excess skin or tissue around the breasts (not necessarily in terms of volume, however).
- Sometimes wish to combine a breast lift with other breast enhancement procedures.
- Be generally healthy enough for surgery.
- Be aware of what realistic breast lift results tend to look like.
The Breast Lift Procedure
Mastopexy, or breast lift, is performed on an outpatient basis. This means that patients will arrive at the surgical facility, undergo their procedure (which usually takes a few hours to complete), and return home once the initial effects of the anesthesia have worn off. This means that patients will return home on the same day as their surgery.
Breast lift procedures generally proceed in this way:
Anesthesia — Breast lift surgery is most often performed under general anesthesia. In some cases, local anesthesia may be used instead. You and Dr. Ogilvie will make this determination before your procedure begins.
Incision — Several different incision types may be used for breast lift, depending on how much excess skin is present. The least invasive incision is a circular one made around the areola. There is also a so-called “lollipop incision,” which may require a lateral extension. Lastly, an anchor-type incision may be required if significant excess skin is removed. When an incision is less invasive, it will usually heal more quickly, but surgeons will have less flexibility in making changes.
Recovery And Results
It can take several weeks to fully recover from your breast lift procedure. Mobility, for example, maybe initially limited. Additionally, swelling and bruising may make it difficult to see or appreciate your results at first. Once bruising and swelling subside, you will notice that your breasts appear much more buoyant and supported. Your silhouette will also look significantly more youthful.
